We were lucky with the weather after a snowy and windy beginning to the weekend , the sky cleared and we had gorgeous sun all afternoon. Once the children had explored the area around the cabanne and played in the pile of leaves we discusses forest safety and headed out to the woods. Carrying magnifying glasses, mushroom id books, string, hacksaws and face paints we walked through the thick forest into a clearing to set up camp.
Children went off in groups and pairs to build shelters for the smaller mammals and the magical creatures of the forest. We saw mushrooms, rodent holes, lichen and heard birds above our heads.
The creativity and ingenuity that comes from their minds when they are left to play always amazes me. Together they built 5 shelters of all different shapes and sizes using the materials they found on the forest floor. There were moss beds, camouflage walls, bark roads...!
With painted faces and muddy fingers we headed back for hot chocolate and cake! What a perfect day!
