Collaborating with the organisation Equiterre this weekend we hosted our Pimp your Balcony gardening sessions in Lausanne and Geneva. 75 participants looking for tips and tricks to bring nature and vegetable abundance to their balconies! For 3 hours we looked at the basics of organic gardening, the limitations and opportunities of small space design... we talked about edible flowers and attracting pollinators. I encourage people to put up insect hotels and bird houses, try growing small pumpkins and sunflowers. If each city resident tries out one or two new plants then we can truly transform our grey to greens! At the end of the workshop we went out to the back garden and each participant was able to transplant some basil, get their hands muddy and sow some nasturtium seeds.
I always enjoy giving this workshop - people giving up their Saturdays to come and talk about plants and bees :) The thing that surprises me the most is how apprehensive people are; they want to know exactly what and how and by when and what ifs. I always say that unless you are aiming to become totally self-sufficient you shouldn't worry and you should have fun with it all:) People seem so afraid of failing they're hardly willing to try!
Nature forgives and will always give you a second chance:)
